 Dear Friend,
With overwhelming gratitude to Hashem we would like to extend a hearty Mazal Tov to Mike and Robyn Kavin on the birth of a
baby girl today. Please join us tomorrow at Shul to find out her name and to say lchayim to the family. Congratulations to the proud grandparents Bernice and Robin; welcome to the grandparent club! Mazal Tov to the entire Rees and Kavin families. May we be collectively blessed with joy in our Shul family and share happy occasions together.
This week we read of Jacob and his wive's becoming parents.
Within the span of a few short years he was the father of 12 young men and at least one lovely daughter...
Now, they weren’t perfect. Sibling rivalries, intrigue and jealousy were bound to crop up. Yet they all stayed true to Jacob and his G-d.
What was their secret? I do not know. Perhaps it was because they stuck together and formed a community. Isaac and Ishmael were just two—and Ishmael became a wild arrow-shooting hooligan. Jacob and Esau were the only children of Isaac, and Esau was a no-goodnik troublemaker.
The children of Jacob were a community, and within the community they remained. So if you want to ensure that your children and grandchildren remain Jewish, ask yourself this: What am I doing to make sure they are part of the Jewish community?

However, that also means that ultimately we underwrite those expenses -- added to the day-to-day costs of running our organization. In order to do that, and to keep helping those in our community, we need YOUR help.
While our running costs are kept to an absolute minimum, they unfortunately
remain extremely high. Teachers for the elderly, adults and children, printing of educational literature, children’s incentives, books, transport etc., are all costs that only escalate.

PS The elderly, children’s education, marriage counseling, books for the invalid, uplifting people in jail, and hospital visitations are a mere spectrum of our daily activities. With a team of dedicated workers and volunteers, Chabad House is more than an activity centre; it is an institution that is absolutely indispensable
on the South African Jewish communal scene.
Some of the programmes that have been developed in more recent times include: Grow Your Life, a non-sectarian programme aimed at educating the disadvantaged youth in South Africa about the importance of entrepreneurial skills; CARE – Chabad’s Addiction Rehabilitation Centre - aimed at restoring the lives of those who have unfortunately succumbed to the devastating realm of addiction; and One
Time Shoe Shine – an entrepreneurial programme that was borne as a result of Grow Your Life.

Great Debates Lesson 5

Renaissance | |
| This
week's Great Debate was “Chasidic Renaissance,” of Great Debates in Jewish History. We learned that the sixteenth century was a time of physical, economic, social, and spiritual upheaval for Jews in Poland. These hardships left them feeling spiritually bereft and abandoned. Rabbi Yisrael Ba’al Shem Tov, the founder of Chasidism, sought to remedy their spiritual lethargy through
inspiring teachings that emphasized prayer, joy, divine love, and the divine omnipresence. It was this last point that encountered theological resistance from many, chief among them, Rabbi Eliyahu, the Ga’on of Vilna. They believed it heretical to suggest that G-d is present everywhere, including inappropriate places. They understood that G-d transcends this world, and controls
it perfectly from above. Chasidism countered with the argument that G-d’s omnipresence does not amount to an endorsement of the environment in which He resides. We learned that in addition to the theological debate, the emergence of a new movement threatened the economic and political infrastructure in Jewish Vilna at that time. Those who felt threatened by this movement fanned
the flames of Rabbi Eliyahu’s theological opposition by concocting false allegations of impropriety against Chasidim. Rabbi Eliyahu erroneously believed their testimony and signed off on a series of excommunications and epistles against the Chasidic movement. After Rabbi Eliyahu’s passing, those who had manipulated his opposition for political purposes during his lifetime felt free
to take their fight to an inappropriate level, and brought libelous allegations to the Czar against Chasidic leaders. These allegations proved to be false and the Chasidim were soon vindicated. When this truth came to light, the harshness of the conflict abated and all that remained was the academic/theological debate about the nature of divine omnipresence. Please join us for the

JOIN US DAILY FOR MINCHA & OPTIONAL LEARNING
Our daily evening services have been growing lately and we’ve implemented a strictly on-time departure policy for Mincha at 5:50pm. The daily Torah Thought is now being presented in an executive summary format - just 2 to 5 minutes. Ma'ariv will follow
immediately afterward, scheduled to begin at about 6:15pm. We are trusting the Minyan arrives on time, so the entire service will - please G-d, be completed in approximately 30 minutes each day! We are hopeful that these new arrangements will stimulate greater attendance and help those who need to say Kadish. We continue to encourage and welcome every one of you to make time to attend whenever possible!

“A safe synagogue ensures a safer Torah” Either actual monitoring equipment or the provision of a monitoring service will greatly ensure our safety. Thanks to Solly Zaslansky, Gershon Abrams, Menasheh Selemolela and Mike Gaddin for our Shul's recent security upgrades, including new locks and surveillance systems.
We are now seeking barbed wire or electric fence and a bamboo mat or similar fencing to block the public view into the Shul. Please consider sponsoring.
Laptop/Computer
We are still in need of a good working computer or laptop. New or used. Mac or PC. Your donation of a computer will help us work more efficiently.

for daily minyanim and classes. We supply daily refreshments to all who come for Shul, however our supply has now depleted. Please consider sponsoring in the merit of a loved one!

Parshat Vayeitzei
Jacob leaves his hometown of
Beersheba and journeys to
Charan. On the way, he encounters “
the place” and sleeps there, dreaming of a
ladder connecting heaven and earth, with angels climbing and descending on it; G‑d appears and promises that the land upon which he lies will be given to his descendants. In the morning, Jacob raises the
stone on which he laid his head as an altar and monument, pledging that it will be made the
house of G‑d.
In Haran, Jacob stays with and works for his uncle
Laban, tending Laban’s sheep. Laban agrees to give him his younger daughter,
Rachel—whom Jacob loves—in marriage, in return for seven years’ labor. But on the wedding night, Laban gives him his elder daughter,
Leah, instead—a deception Jacob discovers only in the morning. Jacob marries Rachel, too,
a week later, after agreeing to work another seven years for Laban.
Leah gives birth to six sons—Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar and
Zebulun—and a daughter, Dinah, while Rachel remains barren. Rachel gives Jacob her handmaid,
Bilhah, as a wife to bear children in her stead, and two more sons, Dan and Naphtali, are born. Leah does the same with her handmaid,
Zilpah, who gives birth to Gad and Asher. Finally, Rachel’s prayers are answered and she gives birth to
Joseph.
Jacob has now been in Charan for fourteen years, and wishes to return home. But Laban persuades him to remain, now offering him
sheep in return for his labor. Jacob prospers, despite Laban’s repeated attempts to swindle him. After six years, Jacob leaves Charan in stealth, fearing that Laban would prevent
him from leaving with the family and property for which he labored. Laban pursues Jacob, but is warned by G‑d in a dream not to harm him. Laban and Jacob make a pact on
Mount Gal-Ed, attested to by a pile of stones, and Jacob proceeds to the Holy Land, where he is met by
angels.
