Dear Friend,
This is an action-packed weekend for us.
Today is our dear Sara Rosa's 3rd birthday. Please join us in celebrating her
special occasion when she begins lighting Shabbos candles for her very first time at 5:30pm today at Shul with a cocktail candle-lighting party. This will be followed with an energetic Shul service and dinner (by rsvp) with our guest speaker, Saul Djanogly. Even if you won't be joining us for dinner tonight, you want to be at Shul this Shabbos to hear his talks The Kabalah of Money and G-d,
Money, & Power, see more info about him below. This is our miniature Sinai Indaba, as in the evening you will get to experience 11 of the world's great talents inspire you away at the Sandton Convention Centre.
So here's a brief though on the Kaballah of Money, to be continued later. One of life’s quandaries is to figure out exactly how to deal with our money. Does G‑d want us to live extravagantly and utilize
the finest materials that He created? Or does he want us to reject materialism, live modestly, and focus on the spiritual? In this week’s Torah portion we read about the construction of the Tabernacle—the portable sanctuary our ancestors used while wandering through the desert. Here, G‑d instructed Moses touse only the finest materials, including gold, silver, and copper. In other words, G‑d insists on using
the best this world offers for His home. Yet throughout the Torah we are taught to live modestly, not to covet what others have, and to give a large percentage of our income to charity. How do we reconcile these two seemingly contradictory approaches? The answer is that in our personal lives we must take the modest approach, but when it comes to G‑d and the community we are to use only the best the world
has to offer. This explains why synagogues have traditionally been the most ornate buildings in the community even when the Jews lived in absolute poverty. In fact, the Midrash tells us that gold was created solely for the building of G‑d’s sanctuary, and the Talmud instructs that the tallest building in any city or town should be the Shul. While we must live modestly in our personal lives, we should give only the best for G‑d and all things holy.
So
thank you for making our Shul the most magnificent glorious place.
See you soon at Shul!

Shul Bulletin |
Join Batya and the ladies for an exclusive Women's Shiur, "Her Story - My Story" exploring some of the great women in Jewish history.
Each week we get together and learn from the struggles and challenges, the celebration and redemption,
of key personalities, women who are central figures in the history of the Jewish people. Empowered by their uniquely feminine qualities and prophetic vision, they inspired not only the women of their respective generations, but also our people as a whole, to identify with their personal mission and spiritual purpose. Today, living in our modern world, we too can connect with these great
women, and by tapping into their stories we can attain personal fulfillment and success within our very own stories.

JLI Review |

Thank you to all who joined us for the second lesson of The Dilemma. If you haven't been able to attend previous
classes, plese feel welcome to come any time! It is a fascinating series and I'm sure you would really enjoy it. THis week we explored how enforcing the law for oneself might undermine peace and civility, and if applied improperly, will cause unwarranted pain and injustice. This has led some to be more cautious with allowing self-help. At the same time, the justice system is often
unable to address every claim expediently and efficiently, and this has led some to advocate the broader allowance of self-help. In terms of Jewish law, the first practical principle is that when local governments enact civil laws for the benefit of society, halachah requires that Jews follow these laws. We
studied a three-way Talmudic debate on how Jewish law regards self-help. The halachic consensus is that, with the exception of self-help in the form of retribution or revenge, people are allowed to self-help in order to avoid the hassle of pursuing the matter through the justice system, even if going to the courts will cause no irreparable financial loss. However, the self-helper must choose the least harmful means to achieve justice,
and in cases of theft, may not take (to keep) anything but the item itself that was stolen. We also pointed out that it is insufficient for self-helpers to know that they are definitely right; they must also have court-worthy evidence to back up their claims. Otherwise, if challenged in court, their actions would be reversed, and hence, unjustifiable.
I look forward to continuing next Wedenday with Lesson 3 at 7:15PM. See you then. |

Weekly Parshah |
Parshat Terumah
The people of Israel are called upon to contribute
thirteen materials—gold, silver and copper;
blue-,
purple- and
red-dyed wool; flax, goat hair, animal skins, wood, olive oil, spices and gems—out of which, G‑d says to Moses, “They shall make for Me a Sanctuary, and I shall
dwell amidst them.”
On the
summit of Mount Sinai, Moses is given detailed instructions on how to construct this dwelling for G‑d so that it could be readily
dismantled, transported and reassembled as the people journeyed in the desert.
In the Sanctuary’s inner chamber, behind an artistically woven curtain, was the
ark containing the tablets of testimony engraved with the Ten Commandments; on the ark’s cover stood two winged
cherubim hammered out of pure gold. In the outer chamber stood the seven-branched
menorah, and the table upon which the “
showbread” was arranged.
The Sanctuary’s three walls were fitted together from 48 upright wooden boards, each of which was overlaid with gold and held up by a pair of
silver foundation sockets. The roof was formed of three layers of coverings: (a) tapestries of multicolored wool and linen; (b) a covering made of goat hair; (c) a covering of ram and tachash
skins. Across the front of the Sanctuary was an embroidered screen held up by five posts.
Surrounding the Sanctuary and the copper-plated
altar which fronted it was an enclosure of linen hangings, supported by 60 wooden posts with silver hooks and trimmings, and reinforced by
copper stakes.
