Dear Friend,

This evening, help us welcome Shabbos Chol HaMoed, a wondrous spiritual fusion of  the Sukkos holiday joy with Shabbos serenity.

We've had many special Shul services during the past two weeks; expect more next week including Yizkor and Hakafot. So, we hope you'll join us on this uplifting Shabbos/Sukkos hybrid holiday.

We won't be using Lulavim and Etrogim, but we will be singing the melodious Hallel, and enjoying a beautiful Kiddush in our beautiful Shul Sukkah.

So far, our Shul's Sukkos celebrations have been ecstatic. During the first days of the holiday, we had fantastic minyanim, dozens of local business people and visitors using our Shul Sukkah to enjoy some food and fulfill the mitzvah of taking  the four kinds. Our Sukkah Mobile visited many offices including Investec and others in Sandton as well as  retirement homes throughout Johannesburg.

The celebrations aren't over yeyt! Please join us on Monday and Tuesday to celebrate Simchas Torah. Those days have the power to release us from all our limitations and bring good things to all of us. Celebrate your Judaism on these extraordinary days to realize G-d's blessings for our loved ones, our community and our brothers and sisters living in Israel and everywhere.

Looking forward to see you soon at Shul!

Rabbi Ari & Batya Kievman

Lulav
The last day of Sukkos, Hoshana Rabba, is on Sunday, 23 October. According to sacred tradition, it's the last chance to change any heavenly decrees and ensure a G'marChatima Tova for you and your loved ones.

Tradition ordains that the entire book of Tehillim is recited the night before beginning after midnight- Chatzot haLeila, then enjoy apple n' honey in the Sukkah. You can join us for a Siyum HaRambam and Farbrengen/Simchas beis Hashoeiva taking place at Chabad House followed by Tehillim from midnight at Torah Academy.

Morning services are longer and include multilevel Hosha'anot prayers: encircling the Bima seven times with the Lulav, then striking the ground with a special bundle of Hosha'ana Arava branches.

Our Sunday morning Minyan begins at 8:00am. We hope you come to these special services! May this New Year be filled with sweetness, goodness and blessings for our loved ones and our brethren in Israel - Amen!

Ha-Ha-Ha-Hakafot

Shemini Atzeres and Simchas Torah are the most joyous Jewish holidays.
Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah are the crowning culmination of the spiritually-saturated month of Tishrei, where the High Holidays resonate with joy and celebration. These incredibly festive days include minor Hakafot, Yizkor, and not one but two Grand Communal Simchat Torah Hakafot celebrations that will, please G-d, be even more spectacular than ever!

The Chassidic Masters taught us that every circle we dance draws forth an abundance of Divine blessings that can upgrade, energize and completely transform the weeks and months ahead, all year long - much like the prayers we offered on Rosh Hashanah  & Yom Kippur.

Don't miss this most-joyous-Yom Tov-of-the-year that launches this new year of the royal Hakhel Assembly and Jewish Unity!

JOIN US DAILY FOR MINCHA & OPTIONAL LEARNING

Our daily evening services have been growing lately and we’ve implemented a strictly on-time departure policy for Mincha at 5:30pm. The daily Torah Thought is now being presented in an executive summary format - just 2 to 5 minutes. Ma'ariv will follow immediately afterward, scheduled to begin at about 6:15pm. We are trusting the Minyan arrives on time, so the entire service will - please G-d, be completed in approximately 30 minutes each day! We are hopeful that these new arrangements will stimulate greater attendance and help those who need to say Kadish. We continue to encourage and welcome every one of you to make time to attend whenever possible!

Shul Wish List

Donate in-kind

Wish List.jpgOur Shul requires, in addition to monetary donations, numerous, more specific areas in which merely money will not suffice to meet our needs. You can choose to contribute, more specifically, a non-monetary donation. Listed below are some of the areas that Chabad needs for improvement. If you are capable of performing such a mitzvah, from the list below, your “tzedek”-ness will be greatly appreciated. The list will updated as necessary. Thanks in advance for your generosity!

Vacuum Cleaner

Thanks to Barry Fink, Joel Dorfan and Henry Dolowitz for generously donating.

New Vehicle
The Chabad Seniors Club is seeking a mini van or other passenger vehicle for transportation. If you can assist, please touch base asap! Thanks!

Security System

“A safe synagogue ensures a safer Torah” Either actual monitoring equipment or the provision of a monitoring service will greatly ensure our safety. Thanks to Solly Zaslansky, Gershon Abrams, Menasheh Selemolela and Mike Gaddin for our Shul's recent security upgrades, including new locks and surveillance systems.

We are now seeking barbed wire or electric fence and a bamboo mat or similar fencing to block the public view into the Shul. Please consider sponsoring.

Laptop/Computer
We are still in need of a good working computer or laptop. New or used.  Mac or PC. Your donation of a computer will help us work more efficiently.

Cold Drinks & Crisps
for daily minyanim and classes. We supply daily refreshments to all who come for Shul, however our supply has now depleted. Please consider sponsoring in the merit of a loved one!

Wine & Grape Juice
for Shabbos Kiddush. There's a special prayer said for one who sponsors wine for kiddush!
Thanks to Andrea Stein and to Jonathan and Zena Bloch for sponsoring our Shul's wine and grape Juice for this month.

Paper Goods
The Shul provides countless programs in which food is involved. These events range from breakfast after Shacharis to Mincha refreshments to JLI classes, weekly Shabbos Brochas and Meals to holiday celebrations et al.  Thanks to Sybil Goldbereger, Joanne & Larry Levenberg and to Ryan Lazarus for a recent donation of paper goods

Weekly Parshah

The Sukkot and Shemini Atzeret Torah readings are from Leviticus 22-23, Numbers 29, and Deuteronomy 14-16. These readings detail the laws of the moadim or " appointed times" on the Jewish calendar for festive celebration of our bond with G-d; including the mitzvot of dwelling in the sukkah (branch-covered hut) and taking the " Four Kinds" on the festival of Sukkot; the offerings brought in the Holy Temple in Jerusalem on Sukkot, and the obligation to journey to the Holy Temple to "to see and be seen before the face of G-d" on the three annual pilgrimage festivals -- Passover, Shavuot and Sukkot.

On Simchat Torah ("Rejoicing of the Torah") we conclude, and begin anew, the annual Torah-reading cycle. First we read the Torah section of Vezot Haberachah, which recounts the blessings that Moses gave to each of the twelve tribes of Israel before his death. Echoing Jacob's blessings to his twelve sons five generations earlier, Moses assigns and empowers each tribe with its individual role within the community of Israel.

Vezot Haberachah then relates how Moses ascended Mount Nebo from whose summit he saw the Promised Land. "And Moses the servant of G-d died there in the Land of Moab by the mouth of G-d... and no man knows his burial place to this day." The Torah concludes by attesting that "There arose not a prophet since in Israel like Moses, whom G-d knew face to face... and in all the mighty hand and the great awesome things which Moses did before the eyes of all Israel."

Immediately after concluding the Torah, we begin it anew by reading the first chapter of Genesis (the beginning of next Shabbat's Torah reading) describing G-d's creation of the world in six days and His ceasing work on the seventh--which He sanctified and blessed as a day of rest.
